About the event
Distort Sheffield and The Lughole proudly announce the 5th annual NOISE ANNOYS FESTIVAL! We’re once again bringing raging punk and hardcore bands from all over the shop to the steel city of Sheffield.
As always, our line up highlights bands with younger members or those from marginalized groups. Another key priority for Noise Annoys is to support tours for bands traveling from afar to the festival. We believe this is crucial not only for building a robust DIY network in the UK and bolstering local scenes, but also for recognizing the environmental impact of one-off international “fly-ins”.
Weekend tickets and day tickets now available. Hope to see you all in May! - NA Crew

Distort Sheffield: Interview
I caught up with Bry from Distort Sheffield- the powerhouse vocalist of Rat Cage and enthusiastic organ-grinder in chief of Noise Annoys fest…

Q) How did the Noise Annoys festival start?
A) It was actually the brain child of Ross (Obstruct/Dry Heaves) and Marc (Dry Heaves) back in 2016. They just fancied doing a fest in good old Sheffield and got some of the best UK bands from the current wave together along with overseas bands they wanted to see play. I had minimal involvement in the first edition, but then me and Avi (also Dry Heaves) took the reins more with Marc the following year when Ross moved away.
We did two years on the trot at the old Lughole before getting shut down. Highlights from those two would have been Protex, Sheer Mag, Voorhees, Q, Glorious?, Disguise plus loads more I can’t remember right now!
Then the pandemic happened and everything was on hold. Fast forward to the new Lughole opening late 2022, we fired it back up in 2023 and now we’re on our third one at the current spot!
Q) The generator gigs are now legendary, what are some of your favourite moments over the years?
A) Best one we’ve done has got to be NA2023 at Staples DIY skatepark. Bang in the middle of town on the ring road, brash as fuck. Proper unity pit of young, old, HC kids, metal heads and punks. Pest Control’s set will be one for the history books as they’ve now exploded in the bigger HC/Thrash scene. The atmosphere was electric at that gig.
Q) From the Outset the approach of Noise Annoys is that the fest never does one of "fly ins" of international bands and all bands tour the UK as part of the trip. How do you balance the DIY approach with the realities of today's crazy costs and logistics?
A) Its pretty tough, but it works. Over the past 5 years or so, it has become normal practice for punk festivals to fly in big current names to play, and we believe that creates a certain standard that is unobtainable for smaller cities scenes. Other reasons we do this is to support smaller scenes in the country and also to acknowledge the environmental impact of ‘one-off fly ins’. Each to their own obviously, but this is our stance on it.
Financially, we just about manage to make enough back from ticket sales to pay for flights/give a decent wedge to the overseas bands, then we organise them a week or so of extra gigs around the fest, and the bands can get more money back that way to cover extra costs that touring abroad incurs in today’s current climate.
Q) How does Noise Annoys support international punk solidarity and build a community?
A) We try to focus on putting a line up together of bands from varied backgrounds, ethnicities, genders and generally support bands with marginalised members. Equality builds solidarity, and booking a festival of overseas and domestic bands that share this ethos is what our community is all about. Another thing we offer, that a lot of other festivals don’t is a sliding ticket scale. Concession prices for the lower waged etc, standard and also a solidarity option if you’d like to pay more towards the festival.
